The Weather Channel has announced that it has greenlit a new original series, "Lifeguard!," produced by LMNO Productions.
Premiering February 2012 and featuring 13 30-minute episodes, this docudrama series follows the men and women who guard the treacherous and varied terrain of 150 miles of California coastline.
Southern California is home to one of the most famous coastlines in the world. From Malibu to San Diego lie some of the busiest, most popular beaches in America, and Lifeguard! will offer an up close and personal view from the lifeguards themselves - the bravest, best-trained lifeguards in the world, who make over 10,000 saves a year.
"Content on all of The Weather Channel platforms focuses on weather and how it affects peoples' everyday lives whether at work or play," said Michael Dingley, senior vice president, content and development for The Weather Channel. "‘Lifeguard!' speaks directly to that mission, offering viewers an inside look at how lifeguards handle the dangerous conditions and situations they face on a daily basis, and the role weather plays in helping or hindering their efforts." Dingley notes that this original concept will take full advantage of the significant audience The Weather Channel brand has on television, web, mobile and tablet.
"You never really think about it but everything a lifeguard does is somehow based on weather," said Eric Schotz, president and CEO of LMNO Productions. "Good weather means more people. The more people, the busier it gets for heroes who patrol and saves lives every day on the world-renowned beaches of Southern California."
"Lifeguard!" joins The Weather Channel's stable of long-form original content, which include its most recent additions, "Twist of Fate," "Storm Riders," and "Coast Guard Alaska," which premieres Wednesday, November 9 at 9pm ET / 8pm CT.
