Al Jazeera English Comes to Chicago on WTTW

Al Jazeera English Comes to Chicago on WTTWThis month, Al Jazeera English (AJE) programming will become available for the first time across Chicago, joining a growing list of US cities carrying AJE content.

As of October 31, Chicago viewers will be able to watch Al Jazeera English's award-winning global news coverage on two channels, WTTW11 and WTTW Prime (11-2; Comcast 370). WTTW is the most-watched public television station in America, serving more than 65% of Illinois' population, as well as sections of Indiana, Wisconsin, and Michigan.

Since February, cable and satellite providers have received more than 70,000 emails from Americans asking for access to the channel. Although many viewers watch live streams of AJE coverage online, this will be AJE's first foray into mainstream public television in Chicago. AJE will air for 30 minutes at 6:30 am and 11:00 pm Monday-Friday on the WTTW Prime channel and from 5:30 am-6:30 am on WTTW11 on Saturdays. Additional time slots for AJE on WTTW11 will be available beginning in early 2012, which will mean even more exposure for AJE and provide viewers with more opportunities to see the program.

"We are thrilled to have AJE's programs become available to Chicagoans," said Amjad Atallah, AJE Bureau Chief for the Americas. "WTTW is widely known for its award-winning local and national productions, and we are pleased to now be providing global news to so many households throughout Chicago."

Dan Schmidt, President and CEO of WTTW added, "WTTW is excited to be adding this important programming to our schedule. Our station has a long history of providing quality public affairs programming and, by adding broadcasts from Al Jazeera English, we are providing a broader perspective on critical global issues."

This news comes just a day after Al Jazeera was named as one of the Huffington Post's "Game Changers" at an awards ceremony in New York. Al Jazeera English is truly an international network with over 70 bureaus around the world which span six different continents.

The channel's content is already on the air across the United States in places like Washington D.C., Los Angeles and Ohio; and it can also be viewed across Latin America and Canada.  Most recently, AJE launched in New York City.  Al Jazeera English is available as a live stream online at http://english.aljazeera.net/watch_now/. Over 40% of the traffic to the website comes from the U.S. and Americans have watched 275 million minutes of AJE live stream this year.

"The US is important for us, both in terms of news and viewership, so this latest development is excellent," said AJE Managing Director, Al Anstey. "We are the lead provider of stories from regions like Latin America, Africa, Asia and the Middle East, and we are glad to meet the demand for international news in Chicago."

"The addition of Al Jazeera English to our lineup is an excellent complement to our commitment to news," added Dan Soles, WTTW's Senior Vice President and Chief Television Content Officer. "These award-winning newscasts will give our viewers access to coverage that already is being seen throughout the globe. This is another example of WTTW acting as a Window to the World for the Chicago community," he added.

WTTW11 airs on all broadcast providers in the Chicago area (Comcast, RCN, AT&T, WOW, Direct TV and Dish). WTTW Prime is carried on Comcast, and AT&T U-verse is expected to add that channel later this year.

Al Jazeera Scores Positively in News Channel Critique

Al Jazeera Scores Positively in News Channel CritiqueInside Cable News has published a very interesting critique of international news channels including CNN International and BBC World, with Al Jazeera coming out as more favourable.

In the critique, Inside Cable News said;

"This caused me to alter my perceptions of the international channels. I used to rank CNNI and BBC World as neck and neck in terms of quality. But then CNNI slipped behind BBC World. After The Maldives CNNI has slipped behind Al Jazeera as well.

"I was in the Maldives while Tunisia was in chaos and Egypt began descending into chaos and Al Jazeera was all over it with more live satellite reports more often from the region than CNNI and I found myself watching Al Jazeera more as a result.

"Al Jazeera is something of a taboo subject here in the US. It got pigeonholed early on as not being on the “US side” because of some of the segments it aired. After watching Al Jazeera for prolonged periods I feel that label is not an accurate description of Al Jazeera’s purpose as a news organization, particularly after what’s happened in Tunisia and Egypt. But that’s another subject for another day.

"Back in the Gulf War in CNN had a coming out party of sorts for how it dominated coverage of the war. The playing field evened out with the Iraq War as MSNBC and FNC matched CNN’s level of coverage. But with Tunisia and Egypt you would see Al Jazeera is now having the kind of moment CNN had twenty years ago. Well you would see it if you could get Al Jazeera here. It’s little wonder Egypt just banned Al Jazeera today because of its coverage, one step further than Iraq went when it put handlers all over CNN’s people a few days after the war started."

Al Jazeera English Launches in New York

Al Jazeera English Launches in New YorkAl Jazeera English has become available for the first time to cable television viewers across New York.

Two Million Subscribers to Time Warner Cable (Channel 92) and Verizon FiOS in the New York City region will be able to tune into global news coverage all day and through the night. This has been made possible through cooperation with Regional News Network (RNN) on their RISE channel.

Al Jazeera English became available to Time Warner Cable viewers this morning at 12:01am and will become available on Verizon FiOS in the coming days.

Al Jazeera English hailed the launch which they said brings "international news to an international city." The global news channel also released statistics on the large number of New Yorkers who are already regularly tuning into them through the internet.

"We're delighted to now be on televisions across New York," said Al Anstey, Al Jazeera English's Managing Director.  "This launch has been fueled by viewer demand. We are already part of the media landscape here, with one in ten people having got information on events in America and the world from our website this year alone. We get more web traffic from New York than any other city on earth. Half a million New Yorkers are classed as regular visitors. Ever since our establishment, we've been committed to coverage of America and New York with a large bureau and team of journalists based in the city, so we're delighted to now be broadcasting global news onto televisions throughout the global melting pot that is New York."

RNN, a privately owned, New York-based news and talk television network that reaches 6 million households in the tri-state area alone will also plan to air Al Jazeera English on WRNN-TV weekdays at 5pm EST, leading into the Emmy-Award winning "Richard French Live."

"Since 1993, Regional News Network has proudly served the tri-state area with original and compelling programming," said RNN President Dick French. "We are thrilled to be working with Al Jazeera English to meet the demand that exists for more international news in the New York City area, one of the most culturally and ethnically diverse in the world. Al Jazeera English has a clear commitment to telling stories from often underreported regions from Latin America, through Africa and the Middle East to Asia and the Far East. We're sure New Yorkers will appreciate its presence in the lineup of channels."

Al Jazeera English is truly an international network, holding 70 bureaus around the world which span six different continents. The channel's content is already on air across the US in places like Washington DC, Los Angeles and Ohio; and it can also be viewed across Latin America and Canada.

Since February, cable and satellite providers have received more than 70,000 emails from Americans asking for access to the channel, with among the highest percentage of these emails coming from New York.

Al Jazeera English was established in 2006 as part of the Al Jazeera Network, with its own content, editors and journalists reaching a global English-speaking audience which currently stands at over 250m households across 130 countries. The channel has continued to grow in reach and popularity, and has been recognized for its distinguished reporting and programming including being awarded this year's Columbia Journalism Award and "Best 24 Hour News Program" at the 48th and 50th Annual Monte-Carlo Television Festival. Al Jazeera English has also won Best News Channel three years running at the UK's Freesat awards. What people are saying about Al Jazeera English

"Viewership of Al Jazeera is going up in the United States because it's real news. You may not agree with it but you feel like you're getting real news around the clock instead of a million commercials and arguments between talking heads and the kind of stuff that we do on our news."

—US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton

"I'm very proud of the role that Al Jazeera has played...What Al Jazeera has done is achieve something that all of us I think want to achieve as we grow older, and that is to make a contribution that will last and be brought to future generations that lie ahead of us."

—Senator John McCain

"That's right, even the President of the United States is watching Al Jazeera."

—Business Insider

"Al Jazeera has been an absolute life line for the rest of the world."

Rachel Maddow, MSNBC

"Al Jazeera English has performed a great service in bringing the English-speaking world in-depth coverage of the turmoil in the Middle East."

—Nicholas Lemann, Dean, Columbia School of Journalism

"There was a plainspoken clarity and a depth to A.J.E.'s coverage...Americans have fallen for A.J.E.'s authenticity."

—Nancy Franklin, The New Yorker

Hat tip to @AJEnglish for fine coverage of #Egypt and #Tunisia. It's sad that so few American cable co's offer it.

—New York Times Pulitzer Prize winning columnist Nicholas Kristof on Twitter

"AJE is the essential source for information in the fast-changing Middle East. I stream it now online, but others should have this important news source on cable TV—especially here in the international city of New York."

—New York City cable subscriber

"Extended coverage on stories are often not reaching us through other media. I have seen some objective, quality reporting. If we are in a global community, we need disparate media inputs so we can improve our understanding of the world in which we live."

—New York cable subscriber

Kuwait Shutters Al-Jazeera Offices and Withdraws Accreditation

Kuwait Shutters Al-Jazeera Offices and Withdraws AccreditationAl-Jazeera has been barred from Kuwait, and had its accreditation withdrawn after broadcasting details of an opposition National Assembly member despite a number of warnings from the government.

The news network which broadcasts in Arabic and in English has also had its offices in Kuwait shut down as part of the government's response to what it deems as Al-Jazeera 'meddling in its internal affairs'.

The UK's Media Guardian reports; "Its reporters are also barred from working in the country. Kuwait said the move was its response to al-Jazeera's defiance of warnings not to cover recent political developments in the country. Last week it broadcast footage of police beating opposition assembly members and their supporters at a meeting to discuss a government crackdown on freedoms."

Al-Jazeera is quoted as saying that it will continue to cover news stories from Kuwait.
